Colts humbled in first outing

Millwall RFC's newest team, the 'Colts' (u19) suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Barking on Sunday, in a disappointing 43-0 away loss.

Despite an impressive defensive effort from the visiting team, the stronger Barking side ran in 7 unanswered tries as the Colts dusted off the cobwebs for the new season.

With an inexperienced side, the Colts were under pressure early as Barking looked to not only dominate possession, but also field position.

"It seemed like every time we got the ball, we had to kick it away because of where we were on the pitch" said Colts captain Jake Vinnicombe.

Without much of the ball, the talented Colts backline had little room to impress. Some ill disciple also cost the Colts when they had two players sent off on either side of the half time break, making their challenge even more daunting, down to just 13 men at one stage of the match.

There were, however a number of positive signs for coach Scott Vinnicombe to take from the match, such as the size and flexibility of his squad:

"we've got a number of guys who can play multiple positions and that showed through today when we had a fee injuries and players in the bin."

While many would be upset at the lop-sided scoreline, the Colts team management refused to be anything but positive:

"it's the first game of the season for us, with a new squad and limited preparation" said manager Kevin Doherty, "whereas it's probably their third or fourth match already plus that team has been together for a number of years. I didn't expect us to click straight away and for everything to go smoothly" he continued "we've got them again at our place on the very last weekend of the season, so it's a great measuring stick to see how much we can improve upon as we play more fixtures"

The Colts next match is at home to Southend on Millwall Park at the end of the month.

Anyone aged 16-19 wishing to play for Millwall Colts should contact Kev on 07896 745965 or email kev@millwallrugby.com training is on Wednesday evenings from 730pm at Mudchute Farm.

email indirectly, contact youth@millwallrugby.com

TOUCH RUGBY COACHES WANTED

Are you interested in getting into coaching but don't know where to
start?

We are looking for coaches for our Mini's section (ages 7-9) to help
them grasp the basics of touch rugby before they graduate onto to
contact rugby.

If you are interested and are available on Wednesdays from 6pm and
Sunday mornings from 10am, please email youth@millwallrugby.com
<mailto:youth@millwallrugby.com>

The club will send you on a touch rugby coaching course and the IRB
'Rugby Ready' qualification to help get your started.

ASSISTANT COACHES WANTED

The Head Coaches of our three youth teams, U12s, U15s and Colts are
currently seeking assistant coaches to help them shape their teams for
the new season.

If you are interested and are available on Wednesdays from 6pm and
Sunday mornings from 10am, please email youth@millwallrugby.com
<mailto:youth@millwallrugby.com>

After you've completed a few sessions with the team, the club will
send you on a RFU Level 1 coaching course to help you become a
qualified coach.

CANTEEN DUTY

Now that youth training and matches will be happening every Sunday
morning, I'm looking for parents and volunteers to help run the
'Canteen' (the kitchen in the clubhouse) to serve coffee/tea, as well
as potentially other snacks and food.

The coaches and team managers at Millwall Lions, parents themselves
already put in loads of hours for the club so I don't expect them to
do this.

If you have some time to spare on a Sunday morning and are keen to
help the club offer this new service and bring in some much needed
income, please email youth@millwallrugby.com
<mailto:youth@millwallrugby.com>

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Let's go to work!

Youth section support, communication and fees

Youth Support and Communication

The Youth section is run on a volunteer basis. All parents and guardians are expected to support the club by actively participating in the functioning of the club helping with organising an age group, coaching if qualified, organising social events and other activities as requested. Club communication is principally by email, via the club website www.millwalllions.com, via our Facebook 'fan' page or by telephone. Parents must notify the team manager of any changes to their email and home address.

Membership Fees

Parents or guardians must promptly pay for registration fees. There is a registration day on Sunday September 5th 2010 where all registration fees must be paid. In cases of difficulty in paying the fees, please consult the Treasurer or Youth Chair.

Welcome to new youth players

Message from Youth Chair, Matt Shorrock

No sooner has the door closed on one season, then another opens straight away. Work is well under way for the 2010/11 season, with new players and coaches joining us and other players and coaches leaving us, exciting times are ahead.

New players (from 7 to 19) will always receive a warm welcome from the Youth Section at Millwall Lions Rugby. Just come along for a couple of free sessions to see if you enjoy training & playing. Wear any basic kit of shorts, socks and shirt (enough layers to keep warm and dry); you will also need a drink (water or squash). You can wear football boots to start off or trainers if it's dry! Once you get into the sport then you can buy the correct kit from the club house or online shop. We also welcome the support from the players' families, which is an integral part in the development of any good Youth Section.

The main objectives for our junior club include ensuring the players learn and develop new skills both on and off the field of play, build self-confidence, establish strong robust team principles and most importantly enjoy training and playing the game. The club operates within the RFU/Sport England Welfare of Young People in Rugby Union. This covers the safety of all young people under the age of 18. All coaches, managers, volunteers and administrators within the Youth Section are CRB cleared.

The success of the youth section is built on the hard work and dedication of our players, volunteer coaches and managers. As always, we constantly need volunteers to help run teams and maintain the club plus sponsors to help fund the teams. If you can help please speak to a coach or committee member.

The youth sides at Millwall Lions train every Wednesday evening and train/play on Sunday mornings from September to April and enjoy a full and comprehensive fixture list.

For more information on joining our friendly but ambitious club please contact Matt Shorrock on youthchair@millwallrugby.com
