MRFC - Josh Lewsey Rugby Academy

Dear Players & Parents,

The Josh Lewsey Rugby Academy has begun for another season and all the
children are currently receiving coaching in their schools from
academy coaches.

From Wednesday 4th of November and Sunday 8th of November, up to two
minibus' of those children will be shuttled down to Millwall Rugby
Club for their introduction to contact rugby training.

The buses will continue to bring the children down to Millwall every
week (except Christmas and

Feb half-term break) until the end of the Spring term at Easter (April
2010).

Last season this resulted in the creation of our new U9s team and we
expect the same will eventuate this season.

I'm looking for some volunteers to help drive the minibus or help
chaparon the children in the bus (we need 2 adults per bus, driver
included).

If you are free on either Wednesdays or Sundays to help, please get in
touch asap.

Josh is visiting 3 schools on the afternoon of Monday 23rd November.
Sky Sports may be

filming one of the sessions.

If you are free on this day and would like to attend and represent
Millwall Rugby Club (and meet Josh Lewsey!), please email me now.

The inter-school Tag Rugby tourney for Academy schools, to be held in
Millwall Park is on Weds 2nd Dec and the Varsity match trip to
Twickenham is on Thursday 10th Dec.

Please help out if you can and thanks for your support

MRFC - A great weekend promoting the club

Dear Players & Parents,

I hope you are well? I wanted to update you on an exciting weekend of
promotional events that the club have just participated in.

Firstly, on Saturday 3rd of October, Millwall Rugby Club were invited
to host a 'stall' at the Island Homes Fun Day on Sir John MacDougall
Gardens (Westferry Road). The fun day included bouncy castles, free
bbq food, a petting zoo and a DJ.

A few hard working volunteers handed out Millwall RFC flyers and mini
rugby balls - which were often seen being kicked about the park. Many
people came up to chat, about rugby, the club and the community in
general so the event was a massive success in terms of both
recruitment and promotion (there were no other sports clubs there
doing promotions).

Thanks to Elise Page, Mike Costin, Steven Corleys and Victoria
Shorrock for running the event on behalf of our club.

On Sunday 4th of October, we were invited to promote our club at a
'Sports Jam' event at Mile End Park. The event was run by our funding
parter Access Sports and some 3000+ kids were in attendance along with
sporting clubs from all over the east end of London.

Millwall hosted a stall with another local rugby club, Shoreditch
Sharks, and again we came off well in terms of recruitment and
promotion, working in tandem with the Shoreditch club to recruit
players from our respective areas.

Thanks to Sarah Edmead, Chezzie Mclaughlin and Steven Corleys for
running the event on behalf of our club.

Participating in events like these are vital for the success and
future of our club - the more people that are aware of us, the better
we will integrate into the community, especially when the events are
themselves based on the Isle of Dogs.

It would be great to see more adult players helping promote the club
at these events - there's nothing better to get a former rugby player
to pull on their boots again than talking to a current player!

Finally, well done to Millwall's Under 13 team, who won their first
ever fixture in the Essex Leagues on Sunday. Centre Bobby Grace scored
two tries and kicked 5 conversions on the way to a personal tally of
20 points while fullback Jacob Lajolie also chipped in with 15 points
of his own, scoring 3 stunning breakaway tries. Backrower Alfie Duffy
and prop Michael Dola-Lami also scored a try each.
Thanks,

Matt

The young lions next league match is on 8th November on Millwall Park
against Barking, with kick off planned for 11am.

Island Homes Funday this Saturday

Dear Players & Parents,

Island Homes is running a Funday at Sir John MacDougall Gardens,
Westferry Rd, opposite Tiller Rd. this Sat afternoon 3rd October from
12-5pm.

Millwall Rugby Club will be there promoting the club and trying to
recruit new members - both adult and youth alike.

Seeing as there are not four matches on tomorrow, I'm guessing there
are a lot of you sitting about wondering what to do with your Saturday
afternoon now?

Well, why dont you come on down to the park on Westferry road and
join in the funday, whilst helping promote the club at the same time.

I need 4-5 volunteers from 12pm-2pm and then another 2-3 people to
help finish the day from 2-5pm.

If you can help out at either time, please get in touch with me asap.

Thanks

MRFC - 1 hour per month, that's all!

Dear Players & Parents,

I am appealing to you for help!

As you know, the Millwall Lions - the youth section of Millwall RFC
has been building on success after success for the past few seasons.

This season we have been admitted to the Essex competition for both
U17 and U13 age groups.

We have more kids than ever under the age of 11 and the Josh Lewsey
Academy begining in October will bring even more youngsters to the
rugby club.

But, there is only one problem...I only have 3 coaches!

That plus my two team managers, means that there are only 6 of us
looking after a section that includes around 150 kids.

I know Everyone is busy, believe me...so am I! trying to juggle a
full time job, a new baby and the youth section at the rugby club is
not easy. But I give my time because seeing kids learn rugby and enjoy
themselves is very rewarding.

What I am asking is this:

Can YOU give just 1 HOUR per month to help us coach the kids under 11
years old?

1 HOUR from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on a Wednesday night. That's all.

You dont need to be a qualified coach nor do you need to have any
special checks - the head coaches and managers will be present and
leading the session. We just need more people on hand to help
facilitate training as the number of kids attending increases.

You will be put on a rota and assigned a Wednesday evening once a
month that suits you and hopefully we'll see you every month for the
duration of the season.

If 5 people volunteer, I have every week covered plus a spare.

It's only 1 hour per month...am I asking too much?

I'm calling on all adult players and parents to seriously consider
this request. Please reply to me as soon as possible if you are
willing to help out.

thanks

Matt

MRFC - History is about to be made, come along and be part of it!

Dear Players & Parents,

When Millwall Rugby Club was formed in 1995, the dream of all involved was to play their home games on the heart of the Isle of Dogs - Millwall Park.

In the years that followed, home games were played in Mile End, Hackney and even in Newham.

Now, almost 15 years later.. that dream is about to become a reality as Millwall RFC return to their rightful home on the Isle of Dogs.

This Saturday, 19th Septemer 2009, Millwall's 1st XV - last season's 'invincibles', play host to our bitter rivals East London RFC on Millwall Park.

Kick off is a 2pm.

Please come along to be part of this historic occasion and show your support to the Isle of Dogs' own, Millwall Rugby Club!

Thanks,

Matt Shorrock

MRFC - Waitrose Promotion this Saturday

Hi Players & Parents,

This Saturday, our Under 13 team are due to help Waitrose shoppers with their bag packing at the Waitrose store in Canary Wharf, as a result of their sponsorship of the new kit by Waitrose.

In conjunction with this, players from the men and women's sections will be handing out flyers in the main arcade at Canary Wharf to promote our club for the new season and hopefully recruit more members.

With so many of the under 13 players away on holidays, we are looking for some U11 or even 15-16 year olds to don a Waitrose jersey and help pack bags and promote our club from 1pm-4pm this Saturday.

All volunteers will be treated to a free burger king meal of their choice.

If you can help out, please email Maureen asap on under13team@millwallrugby.com

This is a great chance to help promote our club for the new season so if you are around, please do come and help for a little bit, it will make a big difference!

MRFC - Flyer the Island 8/9th August

 Dear Players & Parents,

Apologies if you've received this message twice, however I wanted to make sure the message has been spread as wide as possible!

It's time to start letting the Isle of Dogs know that Millwall Rugby Club exists and is here to stay.

And with the season starting very soon, we plan to do it on a large scale!

On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of August, we aim to put a flyer in the mailbox of every house on the Isle of Dogs...and we need your help.

Even if it's just for 1 hour...even if you just do your street. Come along and help out!

The clubhouse will be open from 10am to 4pm on both days for you to come down and collect some flyers and have some streets allocated to you.

Kerry Sweetman will be marking off streets on our IOD Map, so please email her ahead of time on kez_sweet@yahoo.co.uk and let her know what street(s) you'd like to do before they get allocated to someone else!

If you can't help on those specific days, we'd still like you to be involved - email Kerry and let her know what streets you could do on another day and we'll keep them free for you.

This is a club-wide promotional event and we need volunteers from all sections of the club.

Thanks

Dear School Partner,

MILLWALL Rugby Club is offering its first ever ‘Rugby Fridays’ training programme free for young players over the summer holidays.

Every Friday, starting on July 31, the Isle of Dogs club will hold the sessions which are run by Rugby Football Union-qualified coaches and completely free of charge.

The club’s youth chairman Matt Shorrock said: "We’re very much aware that children need activities all year round, not just during the rugby season so Rugby Fridays is a way for us to start providing these opportunities.

"Through the support of Canary Wharf Group and Access Sport, we’ve been able to put together a full programme of activities, which includes a one-week rugby camp at the end of August, that we hope with help grow rugby within the whole of Tower Hamlets."

The sessions will take place on July 31, August 7, 14 and 21 with morning sessions for eight to 12 year olds taking place from 9.30am to noon, and a later session from 1pm to 4pm for 13 to 17 year olds.

Anyone who signs up online before July 31 will receive a free MRFC mini rugby ball to book a place on the course visit www.millwalllions.com

 Further information:

- These events are run under the Canary Wharf Group Summer Sports Programme and in Partnership with Access Sports.

- For the first time, MRFC are providing training and activities for kids all year round, with a full summer programme

- Millwall RFC believe providing activities during the day in school holidays will keep young people off the streets and provide an opportunity to learn something new

MRFC - Junior Club Captain needs YOUR help!

Dear Players & Parents,

Sorry for the second email about this, please see message below from Steven about Friday's flyer mission. email him directly to volunteer on simplyrugby@hotmail.com

Hi Guys!

As you know the season will be starting very shortly, in just a few months time.

So it is crucial that we put Millwall Rugby forward as a very respectable and talented club to get our name out there in the open.

In order to help with this, I am currently organising a recruitment session for Friday the 10th of July to have a few teams of around 3-6 people walk around the island handing flyer's into shops and local businesses, just asking if they can put a few up in the window, or on the counter that sort of thing.

What I plan to do is get around 4-6 groups of 3-6 people. 3 of which current youth players, and 1 coach(and/or adult member) stationed at different areas around the island, and walk your specific routes and finally meeting back at the club house.

you WONT be walking miles to be doing this, as the more groups we get ... the less you have to walk because all the areas are already covered ! Simples !

So I'm asking everyone to please come forward and offer your support but don’t think we will let you go hungry and the club has offered to either pay for fish and chips all round or knock up some smashing food for us all in the club house !

The times i am putting forward are:

4:15-30pm - Meet out side Millwall Club House
4:30pm (possibly sooner providing everyone shows early) - leave in our groups to our destinations/ area's
Around 5:30 To 6:30pm - meet outside clubhouse for home made/take away food and possibly a thrashing on the X-Box.

Your Support is very much needed and appreciated!

Thanks,

Steven Corleys
Jr. Club Captain

MRFC - Summer Programme Activities

Dear Players & Parents,

The youth section has put together a comprehensive list of summer recruitment activities, designed to publicise the club in the community, hopefully bringing in new members and sponsors!

To see the full schedule of activites, click on the link below:

http://www.millwalllions.com/SummerProg0910Final.pdf

The first activity taking place however, is a flyer drop on the Isle of Dogs this Friday 10th July, to all local shops and businesses.

Our Junior Club Captain, Steven Corleys is in charge of organising this event and is in need of volunteers to help him cover Westferry Road (including Barkantine shops), Marsh Wall/East Ferry Road and Manchester Road (including Amsterdam Road).

The volunteers will be setting off at 4pm, to catch the shops while they are still open.

If you are available to help Steven out, please email him direct on simplyrugby@hotmail.com

Perhaps you can do those shops closest to where you live? any volunteers, for how ever long will be greatly appreciated.

The next big flyer drop, will be a residential mailbox one, on both Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of August. If every club member volunteered to do just their street - we would cover the entire Isle of Dogs in half a day. If you can volunteer for the August flyer drop, please email Kerry Sweetman on kez_sweet@yahoo.co.uk

We plan to hand out Youth, Mens and Venus flyers to these places on both days, however if only youth section players and parents volunteer, we will hand out youth flyers only.

The club needs to be active in the community every year in order to recruit new members to the club...every year. If you've helped out off season recruitment before, then you know how important it is....so dont delay. Volunteer today!

cheers

Matt

MRFC - Welfare Officer

Dear Players & Parents,

After years of involvement in the MRFC Youth Section, our current Welfare Officer Pat Salmon has decided to step down fomr her position and focus on family life.

I'd like to thank Pat for her contributions over the years and for her personal advice and assistance as I got up to speed with running the youth section.

We now have a vacancy that desperately needs to be filled.

The role has the capability to grow, depending on your interest but the basic duties are currently limited to completing CRB form for new coaches and volunteers when they join and reviewing MRFC's child policies every quarter to ensure it is up to date and relevant (the RFU usually provides guidance on this).

You can view our current policies here: http://www.millwalllions.com/policies.shtml

This role should only take about 1 hour per week - but realistically, most weeks you wont need to do anything at all.

If you are interested, you will be required to attend a Child Protection workshop - which I am happy to pay for - and you will need to also be CRB checked, yourself.

The club needs a Welfare Officer in place to ensure we are in line with RFU best practices, so if you are a parent or player, who would like to get involved but have limited time to give, this role would suit you.

Please contact me urgently if you are interested in the role, or even if you would like to discuss aspects of it.

thanks

MRFC - Access Sport Partnership & Essex U17/U18 Trials

Dear Players & Parents,

I'm very pleased to be sending this email to you as I have two important announcements to make.

Firstly, I'm proud to announce that we have been selected by Access Sport to be one of their partner clubs for the next 2 years.

Access Sport is a not-for-profit organisation that encourages grass-roots youth participation in sport through the existing network of clubs, in partnership with major corporations wanting to align their brands with, and invest in, community sport.

Access Sport works with it's partner sports clubs, over a two year period, helping them to promote fitness and fun through sustainable sporting programmes, which are accessible and affordable to young people.

They will provide us with signficant and sustainable funding over the next two years and will be working with us to ensure that not only are our youth participation numbers increased, but also that of coaches, volunteers and sponsors.

MRFC were specifically approached by Access Sport to become a partner club and that is testimate to the hard work we've all been doing over the last few years to raise our profile.

The second thing I am excited to tell you about is that 3 of our youth players attended the Essex County Representative trials for U17 and U18 this month.

Charlie Brennand (U17), Oliver Jardine (U18) and David Hayward (U18) all made the long trek out to Rochford RFC, which is approximately half way between E14 and France (I kid you not!) and represented the club with great pride and sophistication.

Unfortunately, Charlie was not successful in making to the second round of U17 trials, but he has come away with experience and enthusiasm to go to another level next season. We are all looking forward to improved performances from him as he leads the MRFC U17 team through the Essex U17 league this season.

We are still waiting to hear back from the Essex U18 Head Coach - Dave Paton, believe it or not - in regards to whether Oliver and David have been invited to the second round, however I'm told that both of them made quite an impression on not only the Essex coaches, but the other players as well.

Enthusiasm and team work were qualities not often displayed by our U17 team this season, but both players put that behind them and threw everything into the trials, actively getting involved in all the drills and getting to know the other trialists.

We look forward to hopefully hearing some good news from Mr. Paton this week, and especially seeing improved performances from both boys on the pitch for Millwall 4th XV this season as a result of their trial experience.

Regardless of the selection results for U18s, please join me in congratulating these 3 young men in a fantasic achievement.

Thanks,

MRFC - Youth Coaching Appointments for 2009/10

Dear Players & Parents,

I hope you are enjoying the spell of nice weather we have at the moment!

While the rugby season may have finished, there's still plenty of activities going on at the rugby club, so there's no excuse not to get fit over the summer!

I'll be communicating our extensive summer programme later next week but today I wanted to take this opportunity to announce the coaching appointments for the youth section 2009/10.

Building on last season's un-precidented success, our under 13s and under 17s will be competing in the Essex leagues and our Mini/Midi's section is expected to grow further with another influx of  young people from the Josh Lewsey Rugby Academy.

I have every confidence that this group of coaching volunteers will make next season even better.

Mini/Midi Section:
Head Coach - Chris Attwood
Assistants - Steven Corleys, Karl Storey
Manager - Sarah Edmead

Under 13 League Squad:
Head Coach - Gary Mclaughlin
Assistants - Chris Davis, David Hayward
Manager - Maureen Lajolie

Under 17 League Squad:
Head Coach - Scott Vinnicombe

Manager - TBC

Please join me in congratulating the following people and wishing them luck for the season ahead.

Notice of Club AGM‏

AGM NOTICE
SATURDAY 9TH MAY
2009

Another Season has come and gone and it is that time of year for the Club’s AGM. This is a great time for members to have their say airing their views on how the club has been and should be run, set the priorities for the coming season and elect your representatives on the committee to deliver them.

This year’s AGM will be held at the Clubhouse with an 11am start (I know its early but people need extra time afterwards to get ready for the HoC dinner).

There will be FREE BEER on offer but you will need to get there early to take advantage of this.

As well as the elections of the new officers there will also be the voting for the Player of the Year Awards (for each team) and also the Clubman of the Year.

IMPORTANT – POSSIBLE CHANGES TO THE WAY THE CLUB IS RUN

In response to various issues that the committee has faced over the past year, we have formulated some changes to the club’s formal Constitution. We are trying to head off possible problems in the future and to make the club’s rules better reflect the growing club we belong to.

It is the recommendation of this year’s committee that the constitution be changed on the following subjects.

1. This committee feels lots of problems are created by the ‘less than perfect’ handover of responsibilities from one committee to the next. At present, one set of people run the club up to the AGM meeting, and new committee takes over immediately after – often not really knowing what their responsibilities are. After discussion, the committee agreed that it would be better to adopt a system similar to the way the US elects it Presidents [Barack Obama was elected in November but didn’t actually become President until January]. We therefore propose that the current committee stay “in post” after the AGM until 1st August. This would give new committee members nearly 3 months to work alongside the existing committee member before taking over in time for the new season.

2. As part of the requirements for the funding we have received from the RFU, the club was required to look into “incorporating” the club – in particular as a “company limited by guarantee” – which has the effect of making the club a legal body and protecting the individual committee members from being sued etc. which is the case at present. After much discussion, the committee has agreed to recommend that the club become a company limited by guarantee as soon as possible. This would replace the existing constitution of the club with written “Articles of Association” but would have relatively little effect on the day to day running of the club. The club would still be owned by its members.

These points will be put to the members of the club before the election of the new management committee. If passed these will be implemented at the elections of the new officers and the changes made to the constitution of Millwall Rugby Football Club.

Eligibility to Vote

All Club Members (whether Life Members, Social Members or Full
Members) are entitled to vote. If you are unsure about your eligibility please see the list on our website at http://www.millwallrugby.com/members/memberslist.shtml or contact the Treasurer, David Leftley or email treasurer@millwallrugby.com . Dave will be on hand to accept Membership Payments and/or Standing Orders for next season's Membership - anyone joining at the AGM will be eligible to vote.

Voting by Email

If you are not able to attend the AGM in person, you may cast your votes by email. You should make your voting intentions clear and send the mail - from your usual email address - to vote@millwallrugby.com . All votes cast in this way must be received by midday on Friday 8th May 2009. We want people to attend the meeting and take part in the discussions…please DO NOT vote by email if you can attend the meeting itself.

Voting by Proxy

If you are not able to attend the AGM in person, you may cast your votes by proxy. This means that you appoint someone who will be at the meeting to vote on your behalf. To appoint a proxy, you must notify the Secretary, Victor Okpevba, in writing (use the vote@millwallrugby.com email address or hand a signed note to Victor personally) before 11am on 8th May 2009 clearly stating that you appoint to act as your proxy and exercise voting rights on your behalf at the AGM. You should also make sure that the proxy knows that he/she will be acting as your proxy. Proxy votes cannot be cast by email.

Remember, there will be FREE BEER on offer but you will need to get there early to take advantage of this.

I hope to see all of you there.

Regards,
Mike Costin
Chairman, Millwall Rugby Football Club.

MRFC - Festival of Rugby **This Saturday**

Dear Players & Parents,

The end of season is upon us so I thought I'd let you know what's happening in the next few weeks - apologies in advance for the long email, there's lots to get through!!

This Saturday, 25th of April sees the annual Millwall Festival of Rugby on the Lower Paddock @ Mudhcute Farm. This is traditionally a great family fun day and, touch wood, the weather usually turns out for us. All Millwall teams are playing on the day and this year promises to be even more special with the addition of more youth teams and the formation of the first ever 'Millwall Coaches XV' (you better watch out U17s...we're coming for ya!)

'Millwall Festival of Rugby' day schedule
Time Team  Opposition
10.30   U10  Thurrock, playing for the 'Gareth Batley' Trophy
11.00   U13      TBA
12.15   U15      Eton Manor
13.30   England  RoW, playing for the 'Wooden Spoon' Award
15.15   Venus  Thames Ladies
16.30   U17      Coaches, playing for the 'Dutfield Shield'

In addition to the rugby, we have a bbq, bar, bouncy castle, sweet and merchandise stall. There will also be music and a big marquee tent (just in case!).

We will also be handing out the following awards for each youth team:

Player's Player of the Year
Most Improved Player
Player of the Year

So I'm calling on all players and their parents and families to come down and take part in this great club day. Bring along a blanket or chairs to sit on and relax in the sun* as we celebrate Millwall Rugby Club's best season EVER!

*sun not guaranteed ;-)

On Sunday 26th April, the Clubhouse will be open for the London Marathon. As usual, we will be holding a bucket collection to raise money for Mudchute Park & Farm, who provide the club with our training facilities throughout the year, so come along and help on the day. A separate email later this week will provide further details.

Over 30 club members are heading off to Slovenia on rugby tour over the MayDay Bank Holiday weekend. This is a great tribute to Wiggy & Shaf (main organisers) and the finances are looking good thanks to great efforts by Batesy, Rick Jacobs, Mike Beech and others. Thanks to everyone who supported any of our tour events – look out for another fabulous quiz towards the end of May!

Saturday 2nd May sees the 2nd annual WAGS and Venus pub crawl - also known as the anti tour pub crawl. You can take that as a dress up theme if you like (Wiggy as Cheryl Cole?). Meet at the Greenwich Wetherspoons at 11am on Saturday 2nd May or call Kathy Garwood on 07872167547 if you want to meet us later. There are no rules on what you have to drink or how long you need to stay. Just come along for one or the whole day. This is a really good opportunity for some of the WAGs to get to know some of the other members of the club while their blokes are away so please tell everyone about this event!

Saturday 9th May is the final HUGE day for the club this season, and will shape the face and direction of the club for next season and beyond.

Starting at 11am at the Clubhouse, the club AGM will debate all the hot topics and elect new committee members to run the club through next season. This is always a well attended event (does the free beer for early arrivers help?) and, being the first time in our own clubhouse, this year should be no exception. We need everyone contribute and to make sure that the right people stand and get elected in the right positions – make sure you attend this very important meeting. We will also be voting for Player of the Year, Clubman and other club awards to be presented later in the day. A separate email will go out this week with full details.

Into the early evening on the same day, around 150 club members and guests will be dressed up and gathering for our Annual Dinner taking place at the hugely impressive Palace of Westminster (the proper name for the House of Commons building), hosted by Jim Fitzpatrick MP. Even with the extra dining room, tickets for the annual dinner at the House of Commons are now completely sold out. The clubhouse isn't going to be open this Wednesday so for those of you collecting your tickets from the clubhouse, Kathy will take them down on Sat and have them behind the bar. Please don't loose them!

Youth Training will continue on Wednesday nights throughout the off-season, but will be moved to Millwall Park in order to give the lower paddock a much needed rest.

From Monday 11th May, Touch Rugby sessions - open to all - will take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings on MILLWALL PARK. Children's sessions start at 6pm with adults (and older children) from 7.15pm.

I'll send a seperate email when I get back from Slovenia to let you know what activities will be going on during the summer. Our aim is to keep all of our existing players and recruit a host of new players, so there will be lots to do during June, July and August.

Hope to see you at the Mudchute on Saturday for our club day. Come and celebrate yet another Millwall 'Rest of the World' triumph! (we have won the last 5 matches!)

Thanks

MRFC - MILLWALL RUGBY CLUB JOINS FORCES WITH WAITROSE IN SPONSORSHIP DEAL

Dear ,

MILLWALL Rugby Club are delighted to announce that Waitrose Food & Home has decided to sponsor our Under 13s youth side.

The team is Millwall's first youth side to play in an official division and they will be supported by the supermarket when they join the Essex U13s League next season.

To mark the deal, which has seen the team decked out in the latest rugby gear, the Millwall youngsters travelled with their team manager Maureen Lajolie and the club's youth chairman Matt Shorrock (April 5) to Waitrose in Canary Wharf.

There they met checkout manager David Harris and community liaison officer Pasty Williams-Canning in the Mill Centre where they enjoyed free smoothies and fruit pieces.

Mr Shorrock said the sponsorship deal is a natural fit for both organisations.

"Waitrose is an iconic brand with strong community awareness," he said. "They have big plans for the future and we're delighted that they've decided to invest in Millwall Rugby Club.

"They understand what we're trying to achieve in terms of growing the sport and they want to be a part of the journey. Our partnership with them will ensure that our U13s team is well prepared for their entry into the Essex U13 League next season.

"This sponsorship deal comes at a time when we are also celebrating a 150 per cent growth in youth membership and this positive vibe extends to next season where we are anticipating further increases in youth participation numbers.

"We can now move forward with the support of Waitrose and I would be delighted if there were other local organisations who are interested in supporting rugby in Tower Hamlets interested in getting on board at Millwall Rugby Club."

U13s team captain Shaun Mulholland said: "I still can't believe a big shop like Waitrose is sponsoring us, it's great and the rugby kit they gave us is very cool."

Ms Williams-Canning said: "In all our branches we work closely with the local communities.

"We are proud to actively support local charities, organisations and youth groups. We felt that Millwall Rugby Club was offering great opportunities for the young people in the area and giving them the chance to develop their skills.

"We are happy to help in the way that we have and we wish Millwall every success in the current season and for the future."

The Young Ones - 28th March 2009

Greetings to you all, Sun the 22 Mar see another 3 youth fixtures played on home ground with an ever growing crowd of spectators formed from both parents & carers of millwall players to passersby who just stopped on their way past while walking through the park, seeing regular games being played on the park seems to be creating a little interest in the club from non members & who knows, maybe some of the local comunitee.

First to play were the U10’s who played Barking and even though there were no try’s for the young cubs, the game proved to us coaching staff that the team are improving. There are still some areas that need work but the team seemed to enjoy the experience & are now hungry for a win.

Next up was the U9’s who also played a visiting Barking side. The enthusiasm of the young cubs was unfairly reflected by the result of the match which ended with only 1 try from the Millwall team with the visitors crossing the line 4 times.

Finally the U13’s took to the pitch playing Thurrock. Despite showing promise at the start of the game, it soon was clear to see that the defence was still in need of some attention & some lazy tackling made it a frustrating start for the lions. As long as the ball stayed in front of the pack there was a positive attitude to gaining possession from the visitors & at time this worked with a couple of turnover balls coming from the lions rucks & scrums.

However, once the ball past the front line defence there seemed a general reluctance to chase the ball with a couple of exceptions being Jacob Lajollie & Shaun Mullholland who’s kicking game once again saved the Lions from a few more try’s being scored against them.

This Sun the 29 Mar will see the Shoreditch Sharks visiting Millwall to play the Cubs and U13s. Matches will kick off at 11 and 11:45am.

As it is the grand opening weekend for the Clubhouse everyone is encouraged to come along and spend some time (& money) using the facilities/Bar while offering some support for the young ones.

There is a petition going around to encourage the council to allow the senior teams to use the pitch on Saturdays, if anyone would like to sign this petition and see more rugby being played on the park please visit millwallrugby.com & follow the links.

We all look forward to see you on the touch line cheering on the clubs future stars and hopefully mixing on a social basis.

Gary Mclaughlin (Youth Coach)

MRFC - Clubhouse Grand Opening!

Dear Players & Parents,

In case you are not aware, the grand opening of our new clubhouse is THIS Saturday 28th March 2009.

** The opening ceremony is scheduled for 12 noon **

I would like to see as many Millwall Lions Players and Parents at the opening ceremony so everyone can see just what a huge club we have now become!

Before this historic event can take place however, there is lots of painting and varnishing that needs to be done and we would appreciate help any afternoon this week (including today).

We are also holding cleaning/tidying sessions on both Thursday and Friday evenings. The floor tiles will be getting a thorough "machine clean" during Thursday after which they will be sealed and should be easier to keep clean for the future.

If you can help get things ready for Saturday's opening, please come down between 6pm and 9pm on either day. The bar will be open but only 'for the workers'. Although we have cloths and basic sprays etc. already please feel free to bring with you and 'super-mop' or vacuum cleaner you think would help.

In particular, we need people to bring down the things they have for going up on the walls - if you have a great photo or a montage please put in in a frame and we'll do our best to get it onto the wall.

We won't be able to add stuff on Saturday morning, so please make sure you bring it either Thursday or Friday evening.

Upcoming Fixtures - 29th March 2009

U10s v Shorditch Sharks @ Millwall Park, 11am kick off
U13s v Billericay (Away), 11am kick off

See you at the Game! (and the opening ceremony!!!)

Thanks

CLUBHOUSE OPENING DAY & PARTY

As you may already know, Saturday 28th March has been set for our formal opening ceremony and party. That’s only 2 Saturdays from now and there is still loads to get ready.

With building work finishing this week, we need to use all of this coming weekend and next week to get the place really clean and looking its very best. We also need to get all the photos and other memorabilia up on the walls in good time. Don’t wait for me or Wiggy to ask for helpers on a particular day – just get together with a few others, get a key and get it done.

On the day itself we will have the formal opening at around the players’ “meet time”. After someone has ‘cut the ribbon’ the players can have a quick look around before going off to their games, leaving the guests to a buffet lunch in the clubhouse.

After the matches, when the adult players return (hopefully victorious), that’s when the party will really start. Apart from Fancy Dress and live music, we want everyone to “bring a plate” to create a great spread keep the masses happy and well fed. We did this before (at our 10th Birthday Party) and people really did the club proud with the food they brought down so I hope we can pull out all the stops and do it even better this time. All club members, young and old, are very welcome and we hope lots of the ex-players will come down and join us for the evening.

All suggestions and offers of help should go, in the first instance, to Wiggy on socialsecretary@millwallrugby.com . We will put up a suggested food list shortly on the club website, to help give people an idea what to bring, but if you have something special please let us know.

Thanks

Latest Clubhouse News

Dear Players & Parents,

The building work at our Clubhouse is still on course to be finished by this coming weekend.

We now need to face up to the implications of having our own proper Clubhouse (rather than a clubhouse-cum-building site). Its an exciting time ahead.

CLUBHOUSE MANAGER

The Club now needs someone else to step forward to make the decisions needed for the Clubhouse to become a great venue that we can all be proud of.

To be 100% clear, I shall NOT be going for this role myself as I have thrown all my efforts into getting the building finished and I am going to treat myself to a proper rest whether anyone thinks it is well-deserved or not! I also need to start looking for a job…

We need to get the right furniture for the place as well as decide when it will be open and make sure sufficient people are trained up to do what needs to be done. I envisage the Clubhouse Manager would make the decisions that need to be made, reporting to the existing Committee, in much the same way as the existing Club Captain or Secretary look after their areas of responsibility. It will be an important post but I expect it will prove to be immensely rewarding as the place really “takes off”. I expect that the Clubhouse Manager would have other people running each of the various aspects, such as the bar, the kitchen, bookings etc. but there is no “job description” at the moment so there is freedom for the right person to create the role in the way they want.

If you want to apply please let us all know at clubhouse@millwallrugby.com – we would all be interested in hearing your thoughts.

CLUBHOUSE CLEANER

The committee has already decided to pay someone (or a company) to clean the Clubhouse on a regular, weekly basis. We are inviting people interested to contact us – we will pay ‘the going rate’. Personally I would prefer our money to go to someone within the club rather than outside to a professional cleaner or a cleaning company, so if you know someone in the club, or a parent of someone in the youth section, who might like some extra cash then please make sure they see this message.

If you want to recommend someone you know, please tell us what you can about them .

Although details would be sorted out with the Clubhouse Manager, I expect it would require a couple of hours early-ish on a Sunday morning (maybe 7.30 to 9.30am) and perhaps another hour during the week.

CLUBHOUSE PHOTOS

A year or so ago, Matt Shorrock produced a photo montage/video of the progress made by club members in the first few months of having the Clubhouse (set to “Stairway to Heaven” if I recall correctly). It was even on YouTube. If someone knows how to create these and could put one together for the photos of all of the building work done in the last year or so that would be a fantastic thing to show at the opening.

We also need you to get your best photos mounted in large frames to go on the walls so we can all see them.

TIME CAPSULE

Until Friday this week, we have an opportunity to hide a small “time capsule” container somewhere within the building that will probably stay undisturbed for many, many years. If someone wants to put one together (no bigger than a kids lunchbox) then I’ll happily get the builders to conceal it for future Millwallians to discover. After Friday, its too late.

AND FINALLY…

A huge thank you to the many, many volunteers that have helped Claire Higgins (our original Clubhouse Co-ordinator) and myself over the months and years it has taken to bring our clubhouse dream to its reality. Volunteers have sledge-hammered walls, brought down ceilings, demolished boilers, continually cleaned, painted, fund-raised and donated to make it possible. I know it’s a cliché but we really couldn’t have done it without you. If I could name it after all those who got off their bums and actually helped I really would – I hope you feel that the finished product is worthy of your efforts. This club is so much richer for having members willing to get their hands dirty and I hope the others appreciate it as much as I do.

Cheers,

MRFC - Junior Club Captain's Log, March 2009

Dear Players & Parents,

Hi to you all! Sorry it's been a little while since my last update - busy times!

The season is now, slowly coming to and end... and my gosh, what a year it has been!

We have successfully created 4 different age groups, along with help from the josh lewsey academy we are now able to put out under 17's, under 15's under 13's and under 10's....and we are even on the verge of an U9s as well! That's more than the adults put out on a good week! And it is all thanks to the hard working volunteers who put in major effort week in week out non stop!

I think our main aim now is to, keep our steady numbers up and try to make more fixtures a regular thing for all age groups for next season. We also have two teams competing in the Essex leagues next season (U17 and U13) which is a big achievement in itself and everybody should be congratulated!

I am also proud to announce that we are about to SMASH the adults in terms of paid up members this season. We currently have 86 paid members to the adults 96 - when you think that we only started paying memberships for the first time this season it's pretty awesome. So a very big thank you to everyone who helped recruit, we should all be very proud ... and remember to rub it in the adult teams face when you see them!

This year, Jim Fitzpatrick is once again hosting the annual dinner and awards night, in.... You guessed it ... the House of Commons! Members tickets are currently being sold at £45, but talking from experience...these will sell out pretty quick, as there really is nothing like it. The food is delicious, the tours are fascinating and the atmosphere is tremendous! So please, if you would like to join us on our adventure please contact You can contact Kathy Garwood (Event Organiser) via socialsecretary@millwallrugby.com ASAP for details.

You may be slightly disheartened as the season is closing... but never fear! There will be many different events taking place such as evening touch rugby twice a week or club house events, being taken throughout the summer & off season, so please come down and have some fun in preparation for the brand new season that faces us! Look out for our summer programme as well, which should keep everyone busy and out of trouble! =)

There's still a lot happening this season, especially the ROW end of season festival (England V Rest of the world day) which includes ... England V Rest of the Worlds match, the Under 15's will be in action as will the U10s and U13s, but the big clash will be the Millwall Coaches XV vs Under 17's, which I for one... cant wait for, as I'm sure neither can the coaches!!!

Our Youth Chair, Matt Shorrock tells me that www.millwalllions.com has now been fully updated - including a new Lions Blog!  So be sure to check it out for all the latest Millwall Lions info.

Finally, I am looking for some idea's to put across to the youth committee for next season... so please come forward with your suggestions on how to make the club better and more enjoyable for all, i would be more then happy to hear them!

Now... Lets go and finish the season with a Bang, and hear the true...Millwall Lions Roarrr!!!!!!

Cheers

The Young Ones - 14th March 2009

Hello everyone,

This weekend sees the return of the Millwall Lion Cubs (U10s) & also the U15’s both playing home matches with the cubs kicking off at 10.30am followed by the ever improving U15’s at 11.30am. Our U13’s are visiting Burnham and we all send our best wishes for their success.

As this is only the 2nd game for the little cubs it would be great to offer them a little support on the touch line so if anyone could find the time to come & cheer on the young ones it could just inspire them to a victory.

As for the U15’s, they are turning into an entertaining team to watch & the Sunday has the makings for a good day for all involved with the youth section.

We look forward to seeing you on the touch line,

Many thanks,

Gary Mclaughlin
Youth Coach
