U15s defeat Bexley 80-17

Millwall's ever improving Under 15s are at the peak of their game after handing out an 80-17 thrashing away at Bexley on Sunday.

Flyhalf and Captain Bobby Grace contributed a 37 point haul, consisting of two tries and an impressive 9 conversions from 11 attempts.

The Isle of Dogs club ran in 12 tries in what proved to be their most polished display of the season, but it didn't go all their way in the first half.

Ever present Fullback Jacob Lajolie opened the scoring for the visitors after some good ball movement, however Millwall spent much of the opening exchanges defending gallantly on their own line.

A Danny Hunt try extended the lead to 14-0 despite the defensive pressure and when Elliot Nagel crashed over to make it 21-0, Millwall thought they had the game in the bag.

Bexley fought back to grab a try of their own against the run of play but from then on, Millwall's slick handling had them scoring at will.

Tries to Alfie Duffy (2), Liam O'Keeffe, Michael Dola-Lami, Max Grecins, Nathan Rachdi, a second try from Hunt and two from Grace sealed the massive scoreline for Millwall.

"That was a really entertaining game" said U15 Head Coach, Gary Mclaughlin "I really feel for Bexley, they did their homework on us and it's clear they've been working hard since the last time we played them."

"But I really couldn't fault any of our guys today, everyone of them put in 100%, There are still a few silly mistakes that we need to eliminate from our game, and matches against some more experienced clubs will be an interesting test for us."

Despite the long list of try scorers to choose from, Coach Mclaughlin singled out flanker Jon Woods as man of the match:

"He so quick off the mark at every ruck, every scrum. He was just outstanding all around the park and played an exceptional flankers' game".

Millwall Under 15s face Hackney Bulls in a fortnight's time before returning to Millwall Park for a match against Bexley on 13th of March.

STRATEGY WORKSHOP

The Youth Section Committee met for a long old strategy workshop last
Sunday (4 hours!) to define our future.

Whilst it was hard going for some parts as we talked about our big issues,
mainly inadequate facilities, some very positive things came out in terms
of where we want to be in 2, 5 and 10 years time.

Here are some notable points from the day:

In 2 years, we want to...
* Achieve Mini & Youth Seal of Approval (Club Mark)
* Have Qualified Level 2 coaches leading all teams, with all/most
assistants being Level 1.
* Fully develop an 'Under 9s' non-contact, mixed, tag-rugby team.
* Have some age groups competing in Essex leagues (or other)
* be seen as the 'best practice' club for safeguarding youth rugby in the
eyes of Essex and/or RFU

In 5 years, we want to...

* have teams in every age group, from under 7s up to under 17s
* have at least half of those teams competing in Essex leagues (or other)
* be seen as the 'best practice' club for all aspects of youth rugby: first
aid, safeguarding, coaching and playing, in the eyes of Essex and/or RFU
* have a minimum of two players representing Essex County

In 10 years, we want to...
* have all teams in Essex leagues (or other) and competing for promotion
* have full squads in every age group with some 'A' and 'Development' sides
* Regularly see ex-Youth players playing for the Millwall 1st XV
* have the senior sides rely on the youth section to provide their core
playing base
* be visiting every single school in Tower Hamlets at least once per season
(currently there are 64 schools in LBTH)
* have at least one player represent England (at any level)

What happens next?

Our Youth Chair will be putting the above (and other) ambitions into an
action plan. Each objective will be broken down into activities that need
to be completed in order to achieve what we want to.

Once agreed, we'll publish the plan so all our players, parents and
volunteers know exactly what we are doing, why and what objective it is
contributing to.

Whilst there is still massive scope to change our direction, we hope that
being open and transparent with our ambitions will inspire not only our
volunteers, but also our players and parents to stick with us, and perhaps
get more involved in our great plans!

We'll keep you updated as we progress, but if you have any questions or
concerns, please direct them to youthchair@millwallrugby.com

FUNDRAISING QUIZ

To help the club in raising some much needed funds, we are holding a
fundraising quiz in the Clubhouse on Friday 25th February, starting at
19:00pm.

Bring the kids along and let's have a laugh!

Add the Facebook event to your calendar here

UNDER 9 MIXED-TAG

The Youth Committee identified the need to promote tag-rugby to ages 7, 8
and 9 in order to ensure we have a steady stream of players coming through
into contact rugby when they reach Under 10s.

One of the issues we face is the constant perception and fear of rugby
being a 'violent' sport. In order to address this, we are going to go on a
promotional 'offensive' to grow our mini's playing base.

We're looking for keen parents to get involved in this initiative - from
coaching, managing, seeking fixtures and even just helping get the word out
in the community to recruit players.

If you want to get involved, email youthchair@millwallrugby.com

RFU GRAND DRAW

Also don't forget that we are still selling RFU Grand Draw tickets and the
club keeps 90% of the sales - this is a great easy fundraiser for the club!
So see your coach or team manager to buy yours now! First prize is £10,000
cash and there are 40 other great prizes.

Tickets are £5 for a book of 5.

PARENTS SOCIAL NIGHT

We want to get to know you, the parents! And we've organised a special
event just for YOU!

Come down to our Parent's social night in the clubhouse on Friday 25th of
March, 2011 from 7pm. We'll give you a drink 'on the house' if you're a
parent of a playing member of Millwall Lions as a way of saying thank you.
Plus, all of our youth volunteers will be there so you can ask any
questions, give us ideas or raise any concerns.

It promises to be a great night, so please do make every effort to come
along.

Add the Facebook event to your calendar here

FACEBOOK

You'll have noticed by now that Millwall Lions are BIG Facebook users. This is by far the easiest way for us to keep you up to date with what's going on at your local rugby club.

If you are a parent of a Millwall Lions youth player, 'like' us at
http://www.facebook.com/millwalllions and http://www.facebook.com/millwallrugby to see our status updates in your news feed.

We regularly post training and match details along with any upcoming social events and news.

Since our desire is to be seen as 'best practice' in child safeguarding, all Millwall Rugby Club volunteers are not able to be 'friends' with anyone under the age of 18.

However, it is ok for our young players to 'like' and follow the Millwall Lions facebook page, since this is carefully administered.

We appreciate that not everyone is into 'social networking' so we are also working on other additional ways to keep you up to date as well.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of Facebook, please direct them to our Child Safeguarding officer, Kerry Attwood at safeguarding@millwallrugby.com

UPCOMING FIXTURES

13th February - Under 15s away to Hackney
20th February - Under 12s away to Dagenham

come down and cheer on our young players - they are, after all, the future
of Millwall Rugby Club.

The Future @ Millwall Lions

The Millwall Lions youth committee, plus club development officer Andrew Bates and Communications Manager Andrew Hesselden got together on Sunday afternoon to define what the future looks like for the Millwall Lions youth section.

Taking into consideration the big issues that affect us now such as space and inadequate training facilities - and only a temporary home pitch - we were still able to come up with some pretty ambitious plans for the next 2, 5 and 10 years!

Whilst we write up the discussions from our workshop and turn them into action plans - to make sure we succeed - we'd like to hear from YOU, the players and parents that make all of this worth while!

Email youth@millwallrugby.com an tell us what you think we should be aiming for in the next few years...be as open and ambitious as you want to.

Rugby's Core Values - Guest Blog: Mal McLean

Following the publication by the RFU of Rugby's Core Values, Millwall Lions will be running a series of guest "blogs" from players telling us the effect and impact rugby has had on their lives.

This month, we hear from 1st XV Prop and U15s Assistant Coach, Mal McLean:

Rugby has been a large part of my life since I was 12 years year old when I started playing for my high school. When I first started, I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing, especially when I was introduced to my playing position of prop forward! Luckily, I had a good coach and understanding team-mates who were prepared to help me out and figure out how to get the best out of each other to start playing well.

That was my first real lesson in rugby; the team is only as strong as its weakest part. The second was 'go in hard or you'll get hurt' but more about that another time!

Rugby is different from other sports, as a good performance needs the effort of the whole team. A rugby team can't rely on one or two good players to win the game because even star players like Dan Carter, Johnny Wilkinson or Richie McCaw depend on their team-mates to win the ball in the scrum or the lineout, to make the pass, kick the goals and to tackle the opposition.

No rugby player, no matter how talented, has ever won a game by playing alone.

Teamwork is not just about the playing aspects of rugby; it's about trusting your team-mates to do their job correctly and supporting them when things go wrong. It's about keeping high standards and encouraging your team-mates to work hard at training and making sure that your mates are ok off the field too.

Being part of a team gives you the motivation to push yourself further than you ever thought possible. Team-mates should encourage, inspire and expect 100% commitment and effort from each other. When I see my team-mate make a big tackle, putting their body on the line to save a try or cause a turnover, it makes me play harder and I push myself to get to that breakdown faster than the last one.

My first rugby team wasn't the biggest or the most talented team in our grade but we did very well that year and won against sides we weren't expected to beat because we played together as a team.

Millwall Lions U15 smash Maldon

Millwall Lions 59 (Tries: D Hunt 3, J Lajolie 2, E Nagel 2, B Grace 2; Conv: B Grace 7/9) defeated Maldon (5)

Millwall's Under 15s won their fourth consecutive match on Sunday with a 59-5 victory over Maldon at Millwall Park.

Captain and Flyhalf Bobby Grace contributed a whopping 31 points including two tries and an impressive 7 from 9 with the boot, in an exciting match in front of another vocal crowd.

Millwall started the match on the front foot with prop Michael Dola-Lami making an imposing run up the field from the kick off. However mistakes soon crept into the home side’s play and Maldon took advantage with a host of attacking waves as they tried to penetrate the Millwall line.

The Lion’s defence held firm and soon after, ever-present fullback Jacob Lajolie scored under the posts. Grace’s conversion made it 7-0 to the Isle of Dogs team.

Minutes later, Millwall were in again through centre Danny Hunt, who broke several tackles on two occasions to score back to back tries, making it 21-0 to the Lions following Grace’s conversions.

Maldon soon got themselves back into the match and marched their way down field on the back of a couple of penalties. The Lions absorbed the pressure and from a scrum on their own 5 metre line, spread the ball quickly and Lajolie scored again and Grace converted again, for a 28-0 Millwall lead.

With minutes to play in the first half and Maldon on the back foot, back row forward Elliot Nagel scooped up the ball after an opposition handling error. Despite several defenders attempting to bring the stocky youngster to the ground, he pushed them aside and strolled over under the sticks. Grace’s conversion made it a 35-0 half time lead for Millwall.

Buoyed by another vocal crowd of Millwall Park supporters, the home side were intent on carrying on the demolition, with centre Hunt scoring from the resuming kick off. Grace converted for a 42-0 lead.

Maldon then made the most of an ill-disciplined period of play from the home side, as they gave away penalty after penalty, finally earning themselves a try, to trail 42-5.

The Millwall Lions then roared into action with a three-try response through Nagel and two to fly-half Grace, to round out the 59-5 score line.

“The unbelievable thing is, there’s still a lot of mistakes in their game right now” said excited Youth Chairman Matt Shorrock, “if the players and coaches can eliminate those mistakes, it’s scary to think just how good this team could be”

Meanwhile, Millwall under 12s travelled to Shoreditch and defeated the Sharks 11 tries to 7, with forward Jack Anderson being named man of the match.

Colts Cancelled for 2011

Dear Players & Parents,

It is unfortunate that I need to send this email, however I am writing
to inform you that due to lack of demand and committment from players
aged 17-19, we are cancelling the Colts team for the remainder of the
season.

Whilst it appeared there was great enthusiasum for the team from the
prospective players during the summer and at the start of the current
season, we have seen a gradual drop off both in training numbers and
players making themselves available for matches.

The plan was always to use this season of Colts to transition players
smoothly into Adult rugby, and hopefully this can still take place.

That said, due to the fact that Millwall Lions have limited resources,
I have made the executive decision to remove Scott Vinnicombe and Kev
Doherty from the Colts set up, as their time, effort and enthusiasm
can be employed (and appreciated) in other youth team age groups.

Effective immediately, all Colts fixtures will be cancelled and there
will no longer be any Colts training on Wednesday evenings.

If there are any Colts players who do wish to continue training, and
we know there are a few of you, Scott has volunteered to attend the
Adult training sessions on Thursday nights to help you ease into the
adult game.

I'd like to take this opportunity to give huge thanks to both Scott
and Kev for their time and efforts in getting the Colts set up and
playing as many matches as they did - it is greatly appreciated by me,
the youth committee and I'm sure, the main club committee as well.

Should you have any questions or concerns about this decision, please
direct them to myself.

Many thanks

Matt Shorrock

UNDER 15s KEEP WINNING

Congratulations to the Millwall Lions Under 15s, who won their third
consecutive match on Sunday, with a 32-15 demolition of Shoreditch Sharks.

Credit and thanks must go to Head Coach Gary Mclaughlin but also assistant
coaches Shaun Score and 'Big' Mal McLean, who have covered the coaching
superbly in Gary's absence.

And of course the team wouldn't be as organised if it wasn't for team
manager, Maureen Lajolie.

But the real achievement and praise surely needs to go to the players, now
playing in their third season together, who have shown commitment and
effort to not only the club and the coaches, but also to each other.

This is what rugby is all about, and on behalf of the entire club, Well
done and thanks to Captain Bobby Grace, Alfie Duffy, Jon Wood, Jacob
Lajolie and all the players in Under 15s for showing us the way! Keep up
the good work!

Come and support the Under 15s this Sunday 16th of January as they shoot
for four wins in a row, as they take on Maldon on Millwall Park. Kick off
is at 11am.

WATCH MORE RUGBY

We believe that children who become better rugby players, also become
better human beings, as they benefit from the ethos and core values of
rugby.

In order to help them become better rugby players, nothing beats playing
the game. Second in line is watching the game!

We know that our current youth members probably dont have access to Sky
Sports (most of us dont either!) but there are four other ways to watch
high quality rugby.

1. Millwall Senior Men's matches
Come along to Millwall Park and watch one of Millwall Senior Men's teams
play. View the fixture list here:
http://newsletter.millwallrugby.com/lt.php?id=YUkIAApSBRhUVlNJDwUH

2. Saracens Premiership matches
Attend a Saracens Premiership match, using our club affiliation to get
cheaper tickets. View the Saracens fixture list here:

3. AVIVA Premiership on ITV4
Watch the Aviva Premiership Highlights on ITV4 or on demand online at:

watch the game with other like-minded rugby fans!
Email secretary@millwallrugby.com to apply to purchase international
tickets

At Millwall Rugby Club, we encourageno, in fact we demand that parents let
their kids watch more rugby! (not at the expense of home work though!)

FUNDRAISING QUIZ

You may have seen recently that the club has a number of financial issues
to deal with in 2011, including an unexpected rent demand from LBTH council
(see Big Challenges of 2011
http://newsletter.millwallrugby.com/lt.php?id=YUkIAApSARhUVlNJDwUH
).

To help the club in raising some much needed funds, we are holding a
fundraising quiz in the Clubhouse on Friday 25th February, starting at
19:00pm.

Bring the kids along and let's have a laugh and try and get our brains
working!

WANT TO BE A SPORTS WRITER WHEN YOU GROW UP?

We are looking for wanna-be sports writers to help us make sure our match
reports get into the local news regularly.

If there are any children (or adults) who dream of being a journalist or
sports writer when they grow up, here is your opportunity to get some
on-the-job work experience and be trained by a qualified and former
journalist - and some current ones too!

Often you'll get your name written in the paper as the 'by line' if they
use your story in full!

Interested? Email Matt on youthchair@millwallrugby.com and we'll organise a
training workshop to see who's up to the task!

Under 15s continue impressive streak

Millwall U15s (32) def Shoreditch Sharks U15s (15)

Millwall Lions Under 15's extended their winning streak to three matches on Sunday as they breezed past Shoreditch Sharks 32-15 on Millwall Park.

Fullback Jacob Lajolie was again the star, scoring two tries and was well supported by team Captain and fly half Bobby Grace, who kicked one conversion and steered his team around the park confidently.

The home side started on the front foot with a try to Danny Hunt in the first few minutes. The score was successfully converted by Grace for a 7-0 lead.

Back-row player, Elliot Nagel was next on the score sheet to extend the Isle of Dogs club's lead to 12-0 as the half time break arrived.

Shoreditch rallied to begin the second half with a well worked try, following a clean break up the side line narrowing the Millwall lead to 12-7.

The two evenly matched teams then traded tries as Millwall's 17-12 lead looked shaky going into the final quarter of the match, as mistakes crept into the play of both teams.

Buoyed by a strong and vocal Millwall Park crowd, the home sided stormed home piling on three tries in the final 15 minutes to secure their third consecutive victory.

Although a final consolation try to the visitors flattered the score line, this did not worry assistant coach Mal McLean, who was full of praise for the youngsters:

"They started a little bit like headless chickens in the opening minutes, but thankfully things settled down once they got their first try" he said.

"I was really impressed with their team work and ball movement, but there are some obvious things we still need to work on in the coming weeks"

"Overall, the coaching staff is very happy with the performance and the boys' confidence is now showing as they continue to translate what they learn on the training paddock to the playing field".

Millwall Under 15s have a chance to stretch their winning run to four this Sunday as they host Essex club Maldon on Millwall Park, with kick off at 11am. Local and vocal supporters are welcome and encouraged!

Colts Match Cancelled

COLTS MATCH CANCELLED - SUNDAY 9th JANUARY 2011

We have had to cancel this Sunday's Colts match against Harlow, due to the fact there very few numbers of Millwall Colts players making themselves available.

We were all looking forward to the Colts fulfilling their remaining fixtures and finishing off a promising season - one that will allow all of these players to progress smoothly into adult rugby next season.

Kevin and Scott are currently re-evaluating the remaining fixtures since they both could be doing other more valuable things in the youth section, rather than spending time trying to organise and coach a team that isn't committed.

Sunday Training

MONTHLY ATTENDANCE REPORTING OFFICER

We have a new volunteer role for 2011, which is the 'Monthly Attendance
Reporting Officer.

Monthly Attendance Reporting Officer
* Collect attendance registers from Team Managers each month
* Compile into one spreadsheet
* Update compiled team registers
* Produce Highlights report

Each month, the team managers compile their attendance registers. A
volunteer is required to compile these into an excel spreadsheet. This then
needs to be sent to the Youth Chair, who will send it to our funding
partner Access Sports.

Microsoft Excel knowledge is required and the role can be done 100% at
home, no attendance at training or meetings are needed.

This role will take approximately 2 hours per month and would suit a
parent, who wants to get involved but cannot give too much time.

If you or someone you know is interested in the role, please email
youthchair@millwallrugby.com
