Merry Christmas from Millwall Lions

A Christmas Message from our Youth Chair, Matt Shorrock:

Let me firstly take this opportunity to thank all parents and players for their efforts and involvement in the Millwall Lions Youth Section so far this season and throughout 2010.

It's been a year of mixed emotions, highlights and some low lights - but the thing that's really stood out for me is the passion that you all have, not only for your children's enjoyment in the game, but for the club as well.

I want to personally thank all the parents for their ongoing support, particular during this difficult time. Millwall Lions really wouldn't be where it is today if not for the hard working volunteers - many of them parents themselves - putting in so much time and effort. So, as it's Christmas, please join me in saying a BIG BIG THANK YOU to the following youth section volunteers:

Sarah Edmead, Gary Mclaughlin, Scott Vinnicombe, Maureen Lajolie, Chris Attwood, Kerry Attwood, Kev Doherty, Dawn Doherty, Kathy Garwood, Melanie Riley, Kay Foley, Vicky Shorrock, Shaun Score, Mal McLean, Steve Hill, Nicky Anderson...and all of the parents who have helped out in some way so far this year! We really appreciate your continued support.

I'd also like to say a personal thank you to the Club Management Committee members for their help and support during the year. It's been difficult for all of us, and we don't always see eye-to-eye, but we are a great club and contributing to a great cause. So stick with it, and the rewards will come!

Before I sign off let me also say a big thank you to all the players of the youth section. You are the reason we are all here, doing what we do. We truly believe we have the best kids in all of Essex and London; and you guys prove it to us every week! Keep up the effort and see you all in January!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

See you in 2011!!!

Rugby's Core Values Explained

The RFU has defined a set of core values that our game should be played and up-held. Millwall Lions fully support and run our section based on these values. We've taken the time to explain there here so you can be familiar with them too.

Rugby's Core Values

Teamwork

Teamwork is essential to our sport. We welcome all new team members and include all because working as a team enriches our lives. We play selflessly: working for the team, not for ourselves alone, both on and off the field.

We take pride in our team, rely on one another and understand that each player has a part to play. We speak out if our team or sport is threatened by inappropriate words or actions.

Respect

Mutual respect forms the basis of our sport. We hold in high esteem our sport, its values and traditions and earn the respect of others in the way we behave.

We respect our match officials and accept our decisions. We respect opposition players and supporters. We value our coaches and those who run our clubs and treat clubhouses with consideration.

Enjoyment

Enjoyment is the reason we play and support rugby union. We encourage players to enjoy training and playing. We use our sport to adopt a healthy lifestyle and build life skills. We safeguard our young players and help them have fun. We enjoy being part of a team and part of the rugby family.

Discipline

Strong discipline underpins our sport. We ensure that our sport is one of controlled physical endeavour and that we are honest and fair. We obey the laws of the game which ensure an inclusive and exciting global game. We support our disciplinary system, which protects our sport and upholds its values. We observe the sport's laws and regulations and report serious breaches.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is the foundation upon which rugby union is built. We uphold the rugby tradition of camaraderie with team mates and opposition. We observe fair play both on and off the pitch and are generous in victory and dignified in defeat. We play to win but not at all costs and recognise both endeavour and achievement. We ensure that the wellbeing and development of individual players is central to all rugby activity.

Rugby's Core Values - Guest Blog: Brent McMillan

Following the publication by the RFU of Rugby's Core Values, Millwall Lions will be running a series of guest "blogs" from players telling us the effect and impact rugby has had on their lives.

We start with former Millwall 1st XV Captain Brent McMillan:

Rugby is a fun, sociable way to stay healthy, both physically and emotionally - it's a great way to vent frustrations.

We beat the hell out of each other for 80 minutes and then party together - the rivalry exists only on the pitch.

Before we play and after we play we're all mates. The rivalry is never personal; it's only about those 80 minutes of playing time. And the rest of the time, we're just a bunch of weirdos that like to get beat up on Saturdays.

When I was a kid, I had a really hard, amazing strict coach who taught us about the values of Rugby and its etiquette. I was instantly in love with the sport and my whole attitude towards life, family, friends, my team mates and opposition on the field.

It changed me. It gave me a drive to become a better player, a drive for success in rugby and also in my personal life.

I've been at Millwall Rugby Club for a long time and I've had the privilage to captain the 1st XV to winning the league and cup competitions - both in the same season!

Through playing the game I love, I earned the respect of not only my team mates, but of other club members and the opposition.....and that is extremely satisfying.

I wish I could say something classy and inspirational, but that just wouldn't be my style. Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory...lasts forever.

Brent McMillan

U15s demolish Witham

Millwall's improving Under 15s team earned another victory this weekend with a 36-5 thrashing of a combined Whitam/Maldon squad.

Liam O'keith, playing his first game for the club scored 2 tries and kicked one conversion in a man of the match performance.

Ever reliable full back Jacob Lajolie also scored two tries, while Daniel Robertson and Joel Murdock scored a try each. Fly half Alfie Duffy kicked the additional conversion in the drubbing.

The Millwall domination started early in the match when Murdock crashed over in the first phase of play. From there, the flood gates opened up almost immediately as the visitors raced to a 22-0 lead.

The home side came out firing in the second half, scoring a try to make it 22-5, but the score proved to be only a temporary lapse in the Millwall defence.

The final result, which ended up with additional points being put on the board to make it
36-5, made head coach Gary McLaughlin extremely proud:

"We've been working extremely hard in training over the last few weeks and it's really starting to show on the pitch"

"Some new players have joined the squad and their fresh input and enthusiasm has rubbed off on the other players as well" said the coach

"we'll have a break now for Christmas but I hope the boys don't have too much turkey as there are 3 matches waiting for us in January and all are very winable!"

Any child aged 7-17 interested in trying rugby should visit www.millwalllions.com or call Matt on 07884012678

SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS FINAL

The final of the School of Hard Knocks Primary and Secondary schools
programme was held at Twickenham on the 9th of December, just prior to
the Varsity Match between Oxford and Cambridge, sponsored by Nomura.

The Primary final was won by Old Palace Primary, who defeated Olga
School 6 tries to 4, while Bishop Challoner Boys - who fielded
Millwall Lion U15 Miguel Miranda and former player Chris Papa -
defeated Stepney Green Secondary 1 try to Nil.

MRFC was represented by Youth Chair Matt Shorrock; U12s Coach Chris
Attwood and Colts Coach/LBTH RDO Scott Vinnicome along with Academy
Coordinator Steve Hill. They were accompanied by staff from the East
London Business Alliance (ELBA) and Nomura.

The day also included the children (and us!) meeting former England
scrum half Andy Gomersall, who made a rousing speach encouraging
Millwall Lions to continue driving for the expansion of rugby services
for children in Tower Hamlets.

Matt Shorrock, as he does, spent most of the day campaigning to 'the
corporates' about needing more support and impressing upon them the
importance of sustainability and legacy from their investment in the
game of rugby. Meanwhile Scott and Chris spent time trotting on the
Twickenham pitch during the finals as referee and linesman
respectively.

A great day was had by all - there was even a streaker! - and several
school players have been recruited to MRFC in the process. We look
forward to being involved in the acadamy again next year!

RFU YOUTH RUGBY SURVEY

The RFU National Youth Council (NYC) wants to hear what you have to
say about youth rugby. The following survey has been put together by
young players and volunteers, and get your voice heard by the 'Big
Guns' of the RFU. It's vitally important we get your opinion so
the game can develop the way you want it to. Your answers will also
let the NYC know what to work on over the next few years.

Please spare just a few moments to complete the survey, the closing
date is December 25. Your game, your voice, Get it heard now by
completing the RFU Youth Survey here:

COLD WEATHER ATTENDANCE

We know its cold this time of year, and sometimes staying at home to
play Call of Duty or watching X-Factor may sound more appealing than
getting muddy out in the freezing cold down at Mudchute.

But PLEASE remember that while you are tucked up warm, the hard
working coaches and volunteers still need to show up to training
regardless. Even if nobody shows up, they are STILL there, just in
case.

We do expect the same level of commitment from all of our players,
regardless.

Attendances dropped significantly in during the month of November and
early in December - even taking into account the cancelled session due
to snow.

So parents, PLEASE do your upmost to encourage your youngsters to get
off that sofa and down to training!

The results will show on the pitch, and in their own individual
performances, in no time!

U15s Roar to another victory

Millwall's Under-15s recorded an impressive victory over Bexley on Sunday. The young Lions roared to a 33-15 win to the delight of coach Gary McLaughlin.

He said: “It was a good game of rugby, Bexley dug their heels in and gave us a good run for our money"

U15 fullback Jacob Lajolie scored 3 tries in the romp, while Alfie Duffy and Bobby Grace also scored tries.

Man of the match Jonathan Wood (backrow) was compared to All Blacks Captain Ritchie McCaw by spectators on the sideline for his ferocious tackling technique and overall tenacity.

“Millwall played as a unit and just seemed to pull everything together as a team" said the very impressed coach “They took everything from the training pitch that they have been going over the past few weeks and put it into action on the pitch.”

Club Update - Clubhouse Open Tonight, Raffle Last Chance, 6 tickets left for Eng v Aus & New time for touch rugby

Players & Parents, here's your Friday Club Update!

In this newsletter:

- Clubhouse opening/big screen showings this weekend

- International England v South Africa Raffle - last chance today

- Six amazing opportuntities to see England v Australia tomorrow

- Winter Touch Rugby - New Time

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

-> From the Clubhouse:

Hi Players & Parents,

Our clubhouse will be open tonight from 4.30pm and will be showing the
Bath v Cardiff LV cup game from 7.30pm. This should be a nice warm up
to the internationals tomorrow.

We'll be open tomorrow (Saturday) from 1.30pm, in anticipation of the
BIG clash of the day! England takes on the might of New Zealand and
will be shown from 2pm. If you're not going to Twickenham then bring
your friends and family down to support your team.

We will also be showing the South Africa v Ireland game at 5.30pm. The
media expect Ireland to beat an average world champion team but it's a
possible "Grand Slam Tour" for the Boks so here's hoping the Boks
silence their critics!

The Australia v Wales game will be recorded and shown after the SA v
Ireland Game and it looks like the Aussies are tipped to give the
injury-hit Welsh a hiding!

So come down and enjoy the rugby atmosphere at your club. There will
also be the usual raffles, shots, Cruga-Biltong and charity
fundraising going on.

If you don't fancy watching the England v New Zealand then you can
catch our mighty Llamas v Thames 2's on Millwall Park; kick-off 2pm!

Hope to see you sometime this weekend.

We are trying to get a First Aid Course arranged, to be hosted at

The club committee has indicated that all coaches and team managers in

Junior Club Captain positive about new role

Press Release October 25 2010

With pic attached

MILLWALL'S new Junior Club Captain is just 11 years old but he's refusing to be overawed by the role which involves representing players up to eight years older than him.

Will Foley admits it will be a challenge handling the club's youth teams, including members of his own under-12s side, right up to the Colts players on the cusp of men's rugby.

"The Colts (under-19s) and even players the same age as me can be difficult sometimes," admitted Will, who also represents his school rugby team at Roding Valley High.

"But I think by talking to them one-on-one, explaining my role and how I can help them, I think I'll do okay."

The youngster from Bow is looking forward to his new position which will see him liaise between the young players and youth managers.

"It's important for all players to know that they have someone to go to for support who isn't an adult or if they have a problem or issue to be raised," said Will.

"I also make sure that kids' views are represented in decisions made by the youth managers."

Will first became involved with Millwall Rugby Club through the Josh Lewsey Rugby Academy, now known as the School of Hard Knocks Academy.

He is now an established member of Millwall's under-12s side but remains full of praise for the academy route into youth rugby.

"It just really gave me something to do," said Will. "Something to enjoy because I never really did much outside of school.

"Through the coaching in the schools and getting down to Millwall, it sort of became a new hobby to focus on.

"I had played rugby before at another club and I really didn't enjoy it but when I started going to the academy and Millwall, it was a lot more fun.

"I have met lots of good friends at Millwall too, so that's good."

Will's aims include supporting the minibus service which shuttles youngsters down to the training sessions in Mudchute and to encourage the coaches to introduce more contact rugby.

"The Millwall coaches need to make sure that the skills are progressing and the kids get to do some contact rugby because they might get bored learning the same skills they have been learning at school already," said Will.

But Will, who hopes to work in electronics or the world of video gaming when he eventually leaves school, is full of praise for the club, adding: "It's like a family here."

U15s bow out of Cup

MILLWALL'S under-15 team suffered a heavy defeat in their Essex Cup clash with Westcliff but spirits remain high for the rest of the seaons, says their coach.

Gary McLaughlin admitted that Westcliff deserved the 50-0 win but said his young Lions never gave up.

'As far as our team were concerned we were beaten by a better team on the day,' said McLaughlin.

'Our guys put up a fight and their heads didn't drop.'

McLaughlin singled out flanker John Woods for particular praise, adding: 'There was effort in every tackle he made.

'He was all over the park, constantly chasing the opposition.

'He ran his socks off from start to finish.'

And McLaughlin said his team wanted to 'train harder' and the best was yet to come.

He said: 'We have got a lot of time to improve.'

Millwall Under 10s - Plea for help!

Dear Players & Parents,

I'm hoping you can help me!

The School of Hard Knocks Rugby Academy (formerly Josh Lewsey's Rugby
Academy) is about to start attending Millwall RFC training sessions on
Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

I had a coach all lined up to welcome and train these kids, seperate
from the other youth teams. But that coach has let me down and 'cried
off' so much that I can no longer depend on him being there!

I desperately need a coach or coaches to take over coaching the
academy kids.

The kids are aged 9 and 10 and come from 5 schools within Tower
Hamlets. They have learnt tag rugby in their school sessions and the
plan is for us to introduce the basics of contact rugby to them.

If you can help out, even if its on the odd occasion only, please do
get in touch asap!

You'll be required to be at the Lower Paddock by 6pm on a Wednesday
evening and by 10:30am on a Sunday morning.

My existing youth coaches already have their hands full with their own
teams.

Please, please, please help out if you can!

Email me at youthchair@millwallrugby.com
<mailto:youthchair@millwallrugby.com>
asap

Thanks

U15s victorious while U12s improve

Millwall Rugby's youth teams put out improved performances this weekend as the U15s played their first match of the season, earning a victory over Bexley 29-15 at their ground.

At Millwall park, the clubs youngest team, the U12s fought hard against a larger and more experienced Ilford team, going down by a narrow 24-10 margin.

"The effort and improvement was there for both age groups" said youth chair Matt Shorrock "I'm very pleased for both coaches and their players, they should be proud of their performances, especially on a weekend when the adult section didn't have much success."

The U15 shot out of the gates against Bexley, scoring within the first few minutes to lead 7-0. Bexley hit back to trail 7-5 but Millwall kept the pressure on, running the ball freely and scoring another try to go into half time leading 14-5.

The second half proved no different for Millwall, as they scored tries effortlessly. Bexley scored a late try but it proved too little, as the visitors capped off the victory with another final minute score.

Meanwhile, Millwall U12s found themselves taking on Ilford U13s in a mismatch of skill, size and ages.

The youngsters held on valiantly and ended the match with an impressive 24-10 defeat.

centre Will Foley and forward Jack Anderson scored tries for Millwall.

Colts defeated at home

MILLWALL Colts manager Kevin Doherty praised his ever-improving side's spirited peformance despite the youngsters suffering defeat to Southend, losing 7-43.

A well-drilled Southend team visited Millwall Park on Sunday and dominated the first-half, running in four tries to no reply.

The second-half kicked off with Southend notching up another five points but a try from flanker George Mulock, converted by scrum-half Billy Gray, hinted at a Millwall fightback.

Sadly for Millwall, Southend touched down twice more to seal a comprehensive win for the visitors.

Doherty said his young charges showed clear signs of improvement in just their second game of the season and the best was yet to come.

'A positive to come out of the match was the tackling,' said Doherty.

'It was their second game and they showed they are getting better as a unit.

'But we need more match experience.'

Anyone aged 16-19 wishing to play for Millwall Colts should contact Kevin Doherty on 07896 745965 or email kev@millwallrugby.com.

Training is on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm at Mudchute Farm.

Under 12s learn harsh lesson in tournament losses

Millwall Lions under 12s suffered two heavy losses at a tournament held at Wanstead RFC on Sunday

Facing Romford U12s in the first match of the day, the under prepared Millwall youngsters struggled to keep pace with the more experienced club team, trailing 14-0 at half time.

Romford powered home in the second half, scoring two late tries to finish 26-0 winners.

Having dusted off the new season nerves, coach Chris Attalid hoped his charges would show improvement in their second match however it wasn't to be the case as Wanstead easily dispatched Millwall, winning 57-0.

"I think it was a learning experience for all of us, myself included" said Attwood; "We went through last season unbeaten and I think we probably under estimated the challenges we will face this season, having moved up an age group."

"The boys will be in for one tough training session on Wednesday" he said "I don't want us to have another performance like this again".

Millwall Colts hope to recover from their last match quickly as the play host to Southend at Millwall Park on Sunday. Kick off is at 1pm.

Anyone aged 16-19 wishing to play for Millwall Colts should contact Kev on 07896 745965 or email kev@millwallrugby.com training is on Wednesday evenings from 730pm at Mudchute Farm

Wednesday, 15 September 2010

U12 v Wanstead team named

The Millwall Under 12's will take on Wanstead and Romford in a mini festival this Sunday, at Wanstead RFC.

Coach Chris Attwood has named the following team:

Forwards: Louis Stebbing-Boulett, George Thomas, George Walsh, Alan Drew, Harry Turner, Aiden Croke, Jack Anderson;

Backs: Shane McCullough, Connor Attwood, Femi Dola-Lami, Charlie Arnold, Will Foley, Peter Protain, Cian Daragh, Tom Johnson, Charlie Paterson;

Kick off for the first match is 12m. All support welcome!

Colts humbled in first outing

Millwall RFC's newest team, the 'Colts' (u19) suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Barking on Sunday, in a disappointing 43-0 away loss.

Despite an impressive defensive effort from the visiting team, the stronger Barking side ran in 7 unanswered tries as the Colts dusted off the cobwebs for the new season.

With an inexperienced side, the Colts were under pressure early as Barking looked to not only dominate possession, but also field position.

"It seemed like every time we got the ball, we had to kick it away because of where we were on the pitch" said Colts captain Jake Vinnicombe.

Without much of the ball, the talented Colts backline had little room to impress. Some ill disciple also cost the Colts when they had two players sent off on either side of the half time break, making their challenge even more daunting, down to just 13 men at one stage of the match.

There were, however a number of positive signs for coach Scott Vinnicombe to take from the match, such as the size and flexibility of his squad:

"we've got a number of guys who can play multiple positions and that showed through today when we had a fee injuries and players in the bin."

While many would be upset at the lop-sided scoreline, the Colts team management refused to be anything but positive:

"it's the first game of the season for us, with a new squad and limited preparation" said manager Kevin Doherty, "whereas it's probably their third or fourth match already plus that team has been together for a number of years. I didn't expect us to click straight away and for everything to go smoothly" he continued "we've got them again at our place on the very last weekend of the season, so it's a great measuring stick to see how much we can improve upon as we play more fixtures"

The Colts next match is at home to Southend on Millwall Park at the end of the month.

Anyone aged 16-19 wishing to play for Millwall Colts should contact Kev on 07896 745965 or email kev@millwallrugby.com training is on Wednesday evenings from 730pm at Mudchute Farm.

morning, I'm looking for parents and volunteers to help run the
'Canteen' (the kitchen in the clubhouse) to serve coffee/tea, as well
as potentially other snacks and food.

The coaches and team managers at Millwall Lions, parents themselves
already put in loads of hours for the club so I don't expect them to
do this.

If you have some time to spare on a Sunday morning and are keen to
help the club offer this new service and bring in some much needed
income, please email youth@millwallrugby.com
<mailto:youth@millwallrugby.com>

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Let's go to work!
